City Nature Challenge ’23
Join the CNC April 28 – May 1 2023!
Do you live in a city? Do you love nature? What I’m about to tell you might be something you would be excited about. This is the first time India is taking part in an international nature challenge in a major way. It’s called the City Nature Challenge and it is the world’s biggest biodiversity count.
Very simply, City Nature Challenge is about documenting nature where people live, especially in urban areas.
What is it?
It was started by the people at Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and California Academy of Sciences. It is an international effort for people to find and document plants and wildlife in cities across the globe. It’s a bioblitz-style competition where cities are in a contest against each other to see who can make the most observations of nature, who can find the most species, and who can engage the most people.
This year, my organization The Naturalist School is bringing City Nature Challenge to 3 major cities in India – Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi NCR. We are also supporting CNC in 27 other major Indian cities.
For 4 days, participating individuals have to take as many nature observations as possible on the iNaturalist app. We’re hoping to bring India on the world map in terms of recording and observing biodiversity.
